Don't let the cold weather deter you from shooting outdoors! Nothing compares to braving the elements for some high-power fun. Trust me, once you get going you forget all about the cold! But, there's a way to do it right.

1. Dress in layers - Although it may feel freezing when you're walking out the door. You will likely warm up once the shootin' gets goin'! The hubby is a huge fan of long undies when we shoot in the cold.

2. Have the appropriate gear - You don't want to bring your super duper ski gloves to the range. You won't be able to wear them while shooting and taking them on and off will become. Take the time to find a good pair of lightweight cotton or fleece gloves with some kind of grippy material on the fingers/palms.

Of course there are always gloves made specifically for shooting, but sometimes those can come at a premium.

If It's snowing, wear a brimmed cap or a fur trimmed hood, it will help keep the snow out of your face.

Prepare for a possibly muddy situation, don't wear your best boots - they'll probably get ruined.

3. Have the appropriate equipment - Maglula Uplula is your friend! Repeat this mantra over and over!

Maglula is the key to keeping your fingers happy, in any weather really! But in the cold weather, it's truly a life saver.

4. Safety - Don't let the cold weather distract you from practicing proper gun safety. It's easy when, you're cold, to be hasty and try to do things quickly because you might be shivering. This is how mistakes get made. Remember to slow down and pay attention. No matter how warmly you're dressed a day will be easily ruined by unsafe gun handling.

5. Don't forget to have fun!! - Yes it's cold but try to appreciate that you're out in the elements with fresh air on your skin and not in a stuffy, smelly indoor range! (Not that there's anything terribly wrong with that either!)

<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Really this is for anyone who is thinking about carrying concealed. It is a HUGE responsibility and it is something that you need to prepare yourself for mentally and physically for. It is not something to do on a whim.
<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">The notion of carrying around a gun as a means of protection is nice, but what happens if you are ever forced to use that gun? Will you act correctly and effectively? What if there are innocent people behind your target? Will your mind be able to take that into account? What if your gun jams? There are many questions like these that would arise in a self defense situation.
<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">This is not meant to scare or deter you AT ALL from carrying, but rather to give you some pause for thought. There are many femmes out there who go out and grab a small revolver to keep in their purse, but don't take the time to train themselves. But there are many things you CAN do to CCW effectively and safely:

<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Take a course focused on carrying concealed: These courses put you in simulated high stress live fire situations. They teach you how to act instinctively and properly. The basic pistol course is NOT sufficient for this purpose.

<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Participate in Competitive Shooting: Shooting competitively is a great way to train your mind to operate effectively and rationally during a high stress situation.

<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Start training yourself mentally, practice becoming VERY aware of your surroundings. While out doing errands, try to imagine at any moment needing to draw your weapon and in your mind go through the actions you would take. Where is your target? What's behind or around it? Do you have kids with you? Where do you put your kids? What are the people around you doing? <<< This is just something to do in the meantime, it should not take the place of a course.

<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Here are some links to help you on your way:
HOWEVER, I've finally come up with some options that work for me. They may not work for everyone, but I will share what I've got so far.

When I left off in Taking the First Step to Carrying Concealed, I was testing out my - at the time - new Ruger SR9C. It turned out that that gun was simply too bulky for me to conceal effectively. So let's start with a chart of, just some of, your weapon options and their pro's and con's.

WEAPON:

Before I throw down my mega-chart, let me define the categories for you.

Gun: Well that one is probably pretty self explanatory!

Caliber: For this one I will refer you back to SAHM With a Passion for Weaponry, in which I defined most of the popular calibers for you.

Capacity: This is how many rounds of ammunition the gun can hold. This number will read something like "7+1" this means that the particular gun can hold 7 rounds in the magazine or 8 total with one round racked into the chamber. And for further explanation on that, I will refer you back to A Day at the Range, more specifically the "Vocab Lesson" section.
*Capacity marked with an asterisk are for revolvers. There is no "one in the chamber" on a revolver. All rounds are held in the cylinder until fired.

Concealabillity: I will rate it 1-5 (to keep it simple).

Pro's and Con's: These are going to be pretty much based on my opinion and those reviews that I've read online.

The delightful little gun marked in lavender is my baby! This has become my EDC (Everyday Carry) and I couldn't love it more! Noteworthy: This gun is not on the Mass Approved Roster yet, so it takes some work to get your hands on one, but it is NOT illegal to own.
will be the case for most guns in this list, in order to be Mass compliant

I personally don't mind this, but a long trigger pull CAN affect your

the con's list begins: First, it is a .380, not my favorite round. Not a lot
of stopping power. Combine that with a not terribly impressive capacity, and
you're not off to a great start. Also, it has a particularly terribly trigger
pull. Finally is the seemingly "pro" feature, which is the laser
sight that is built it. This is a bit gimmicky to me. Take a look at the
manufacturer link and observe where the button is located for the laser
sight. In a high stress situation, you will never have the time or composure
to activate the laser. It's just not practical. That is one BIG gap in the
"pro" column
HOLSTER:

Ok so now for holsters...

I have found two holsters that really work for me. Holsters can be expensive so I haven't had the luxury of testing numerous holsters for this little blog of mine.

1. CrossBreed Mini Tuck
CrossBreed Mini-Tuck

(Picture shown is with horsehide, mine is cowhide and black not tan)

Really excellent holster. Excellent quality, durability, comfort. It's slim and conceals VERY well. My only issue is it can't be appendix (a.k.a. 1 o'clock) carried which means in the front of your pants. My problem is I seem to suffer from chronic plumbers crack (TMI??) and that means that my lower back is frequently exposed if I'm bending or squatting, which with 2 wee ones happens quite frequently. I did remedy this by wearing a long fitted camisole under my shirt and tucking that around the gun as an extra layer of concealment, but it does still print on the cami. I wear my CrossBreed just off center of the middle of my back. This makes the hubby crazy. He says it's not accessible enough. As a man, he has the convenience of wearing almost directly on his hip... why? Because like most men, he isn't curvy (in all the right places) and has the luxury of button down shirts, flannels, overcoats, etc.To an extent he's right. If someone were to grab me from behind, it's fairly likely they'd feel my gun and then I could be at a disadvantage. I'm still working on this.

CrossBreed also makes the "Mini Clip" which I haven't tried, but it was designed for the Ruger LCP and works for other smaller carry guns.

2. Remora RFT No Clip Holster
Remora Holsters

Possibly the best invention known to man.. ok maybe I'm exaggerating a BIT, but this holster is super cool. It's made of a somewhat clingy/stick material which allows you to tuck it just about anywhere along your waist line - can you say appendix carry?? And you don't need to be wearing jeans or a belt. Let's face it, how often am I wearing jeans when I'm home chasing the two little ones around the house? Not very often. I've worn this holster with sweatpants, yoga pants and of course jeans.

But that's not all folks! This nifty little holster can also come with a thigh/ankle holster attachment! This allows for thigh carry on the summer days when you want to wear a skirt or sun dress, or ankle carry if you're out and in some boot-cut jeans and pumps! The possibilities are not quite endless, but just about! And if you want to be really "tacti-cool", you can carry on the outer thigh, but I'm not sure exactly what situation that would be socially acceptable in!

ATTIRE:

So even with the wide variety of guns available and some really fantastic holsters, we femmes still need to alter our attire just a weee bit. Here are some tips:

Layers are your friend: In the winter, this should be your mantra. I like a cami tucked around and over the gun, t-shirt or whatever, then fleece or sweatshirt or some other semi thicker layer. I am often donning my signature pink North Face fleece, which is an excellent concealer and I'm never too cold or too hot.

Think about what you're going to be doing for the day and dress accordingly. For me this means: Supermarket? This will involve LOTS of bending down because my 18 month old loves to throw things out of the cart. This further means it's a Remora appendix carry kind of day.

The appendix carry is a bit more difficult to pull off, depending on the gun. With my Beretta Nano, it requires donning my North Face, otherwise it looks like I might have man-parts, if you know what I mean!

Spring/Summer can mean a slightly easier carry situation, but choose flowy skirts/dresses. A pencil skirt isn't going to be your best friend. << This is all with regard to thigh carry of course.

In the fall I will likely modify my winter carry to have my 2 shirt method plus a flannel or other light feminine button down shirt that I'll wear as an over shirt.

White is a TERRIBLE concealer. Black is good, prints are best.

If you're going to use a holster that has clips, get a DECENT belt. This is where it's best to sacrifice fashion for practicality. A 1/2" or 3/4" belt is not going to cut it.

I hope this helps some of you femmes take the next step towards defending yourself and carrying concealed. And as always, any questions - feel free to comment below!

Happy Shooting!
Yesterday I had one of the best days at the range I've ever had. It's so easy to get so wrapped up in the media and everything going on around you, that you forget to focus on yourself! Aside from being a means of defense, shooting is FUN! Need I reference you to my earlier post "Plinkin and Thinkin"?

You know it's been a good day at the range when:

But, it truly doesn't matter if you shoot well, or you shoot... not so well.. who cares!!

It was a freezing day here in New England and we layered up (about 4 layers of fleece and long undies) and had ourselves a blast outside in the wonderful fresh air! We took a day away from the kids, away from TV and everything else to just "be". That's what my Nana used to call it. She would love to go to the Cape, no matter the season, and she would stand on the beach and face the water with her arms stretched up in the air (even when she was in her 80's!) and she would just "be". I always wished I could have taken my Nana shooting, she would have LOVED it!

We shot our AR-15 and some of our pistols (Glock 30, 19, 21 and Beretta Nano) but the highlight of our day was then a fellow shooter let us take a few shots with his Uzi! Sound intimidating right?? Not AT ALL!! One of the easiest and softest guns I've ever shot, but no less AWESOME!!!

It was a great day!
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">A Georgia mother shot an ex-convict six times to protect her and her children after he apparently forced his way into the family’s home.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The mom heard knocks on her front door Friday and assumed it was just a solicitor, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">She told her 9-year-old twins not to answer the door and, when the visitor began repeatedly ringing the doorbell, she called her husband at his job and he told her to gather the children and hide.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">According to the Journal-Constitution, the father then dialed 911 and his wife, who works from a home office, hid with the children in a crawlspace.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">By that time, according to the paper, the intruder had used a crowbar to forcibly enter the home, and made his way to the home office.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">“He opens the closet door and finds himself staring down the barrel of a .38 revolver,” Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The woman fired six bullets, five of which hit Paul Ali Slater in the face and neck area, Chapman said. But Slater, who has arrests dating to 2008 and was released from jail in August, was still conscious.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">“The guy’s face down, crying,” the sheriff said. The woman told him to stay down or she’d shoot again.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">While down, the woman and her children ran to a neighbor’s house, and the injured intruder made it out of the home and into his car, the paper reported.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Authorities found Slater a short time later bleeding profusely in a neighbor’s driveway.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">“I’m dying. Help me,” he told them, according to Chapman.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Slater was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center and is expected to survive, the sheriff said.
<span style="color: blue; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Something to note about this article:
<span style="color: blue; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: blue; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">By the time to police got there, if she hadn't been armed, terrible things would have already been happening to her or her children.
<span style="color: blue; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: blue; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Fellow Femmes, we are a targeted group... we need to defend ourselves. Though the Police are there to serve and protect, they cannot be everywhere at once and get there as soon as you make the call.
<span style="color: blue; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: blue; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">If you call 9-1-1 from a cell phone it goes to a State Police barracks who then transfers you to your local police.. all this takes time - precious time. Don't get me wrong - in the event of a possible break in, by all means CALL THE POLICE, but don't make yourself a sitting duck just hoping the police will get there before the would be intruder makes there way in.

A big change is on the horizon for gun rights in this country. The voice of women in this country in favor of maintaining our right to bear arms should ring out across the country.

It is important to remember that people who intend to do bad things, be it on a small or large scale, will ALWAYS do bad things. Making guns illegal will NOT stop them. It will only take them out of the hands of the law abiding citizens who intend to use them for lawful and defensive purposes.

There are many things in this country that are illegal and yet those who want them, still manage to obtain them.

Femmes you MUST educate yourselves about guns. Ask questions, get familiar, understand the differences between a true "assault weapon" (which is used by our armed forces) and what's being labeled an "assault weapon" by those in favor of banning them. It was like everything I knew about guns and shooting instantly went out of my head. Truly amazing the effect pressure has on the mind! But, you know what? I had a BLAST (pun totally intended)!!

I had been nervous to participate in any kind of competition, but this was the best thing I could have done. It taught me a lot about what it would be like to use my gun in a high pressure situation. My dad has always told me that I should not carry concealed until I have had the opportunity to compete, and - though I hate to admit it - he was totally right. The notion of carrying concealed is one thing, but using your concealed weapon effectively in a bad situation is a whole other animal.

I also got to meet some great people, a woman who was taking shooting back up for the first time in 20 years and she did great and was an awesome woman! There was another lady there, who I unfoturnately didn't get to meet.. but that was it - just 3 lovely femmes! Let's get out there ladies!

If you're interested in carrying concealed, please consider coming to one of these events.

The matches are held 1 Wednesday per month at Hopkinton Sportsmens Association, you DON'T need to be a member - it's open to the public and it's only $3 per round and you can sign up for as many rounds as you want. If you win, you get $6 - big stakes here [wink, wink]!

I hope to hear from some of you!La Femmehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18116516909538487997noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6963231120954586625.post-74763220157224611762012-12-06T11:37:00.001-08:002012-12-06T11:37:06.390-08:00Defend Yourself Part II<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">A while back I posted an article about a heroic woman who defended herself against an intruder. Well, just last month another admirable femme was able to save herself from an attack:
ALCALDE, N.M.—A 35-year-old woman
says she shot and killed a man after he allegedly barged into her Alcalde home
and tried to undress her at knife point.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports (http://bit.ly/QqNnw4) that search warrant
affidavits say the shooting Saturday occurred when 33-year-old Taos resident
Lawrence Sandoval forced his way into the woman's home. She told deputies that
she believed he followed her home from a gas station.
According to deputies, the woman says Sandoval grabbed a knife, put the knife
to her chin and told her to take off her clothes. The woman told deputies she
then reached under her pillow, grabbed a loaded gun and shot him. She fled from
her home and called 911.
Officials say Sandoval died at the scene.
No charges have been filed.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Now, I personally wouldn't advise keeping a loaded gun under your pillow, but that's far from the point here. The point is that this woman got away with her life.
What are your thoughts on this??

What's her hobby? Rescuing wolf hybrids. Awesome right? How could she possibly be afraid of anything when she comes face to face with wolves every day?

She and her husband contacted me after they had a scare in their home. They thought their home was being invaded one night. Frank grabbed one of his 2 pistols and headed towards the sounds and Karen grabbed....something heavy. It was then, she told me, she realized if something happened to Frank the would be intruder would have been armed and she wouldn't know what to do with the other pistol available to her. She realized she needed to become familiar with the handling of a firearm in the event this hadn't been a false alarm.

Prior to this event, Karen had been terribly afraid of guns, didn't like the sight of them, didn't want to touch one. But realizing she wouldn't have been able to defend herself was the push she needed.

Karen and I spoke a bit via email so I could gauge what she knew, what her fears were, etc.

A few days later, we met for coffee 5 minutes away from the club I belong to. I told her, before meeting, there would be no pressure for her to shoot a gun. I was happy to just discuss it over coffee and take it from there. Coffee and excellent conversation were had and she decided she was ready. She wanted to do it!

We hopped into our respective vehicles and headed for the range.

We put on our "eyes and ears", set up at one of the pistol bays, went thoroughly over the 4 Rules of Handling a gun, range etiquette and we were on our way!

I started by showing her how to verify that a gun was "clear" and then we moved on to proper grip and all the parts of the gun.

Once she was comfortable with grip and operation, I fired off five rounds to give her an idea of what to expect.

Now, it was her turn. She started off with a Glock 19 (9 mm) pistol. I loaded 1 round into the magazine. She picked up the gun, loaded the magazine (like a pro!), took her stance and fired!

After clearing the gun for her, I asked how she felt and she responded, "great!"And the best part... she wanted MORE!! She did a few more times of shooting just 1 round in the mag at a time and then moved to 3 and then to 5. After getting familiar with the Glock, she shot my Beretta 92FS (9 mm).

What I had anticipated would be maybe a half hour at the range turned into about 2.5 hours. It was fantastic!

At the end of the day she had a target that looked like swiss cheese (except with many more holes)! She had a fantastic day and was using phrases like "when I go back to the range". It was a truly rewarding experience that ended with a great big hug. Not only had a introduced a fellow femme to shooting, I had made a new friend!

Where is Karen Now?

Karen has since gone shooting with her husband and son; and taken a private shooting course with an excellent instructor. Karen has been heard using phrases such as "when I get my gun," words she thought she'd never udder, on a regular basis.

Thank you to Karen for giving shooting (and me) a chance!

To all you curious femmes out there, you never know... there could be a natural shooter in you - just like Karen!La Femmehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18116516909538487997noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6963231120954586625.post-19595479290598933922012-12-01T18:25:00.000-08:002012-12-01T18:25:09.291-08:00Success Story #254<span style="color: magenta; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">A story brought to us by a member of Northeastshooters.com:
<span style="color: magenta; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="color: magenta; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Let me start by saying my family has no idea I'm into firearms. Instead of worrying them with my hobby/lifestyle, I kept it to myself. Thanksgiving my sister came up from MD to visit and I floated the idea by her to go shooting and expected her response to be indifferent at best. Nope, she got a big KoolAid smile and was IN. Her only concern was whether the range was indoors or out.

I ran through the safety rules, demonstrated how my P22 works and got her comfortable with the manual of arms. Then I broke out the S&W 15-22 and her reaction was along the lines of "Woah, that looks scary". I assured her it was no more dangerous than the pistol, fired exactly the same ammunition.
<span style="color: magenta; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
Fast forward to the range. I can't describe how excited she was. It was all I could do to get the target up and show her which way to load the magazine. She was ready to go...

First was the P22. Next up was the AR 15-22. She was a little apprehensive about the recoil, but after the first shot she was loving it. Here she is making a Bad-Ass-Mofo with her first paper plate...

By the time we left she had a stack of targets to show off to her friends and she was psyched.

I told her by next year I'll have a real AR she can shoot. Oh happy days.
Well I guess the first step was getting my license to carry, but I finally took out my new gun for a test run.

I'm a huge proponent of women carrying concealed - obviously. Just imagine how different the outcome could of been for all the women who have been so unfortunate to be the victim of some of the monsters that live amongst us, if they had been carrying a gun to defend themselves with. As I always promise, I won't go all "soap box" on you guys, but just some food for thought.

Carrying concealed can be intimidating. The thought of having a firearm strapped to you at all times - understandably unnerving. But it doesn't need to be. With proper training and practice, a gun can be kept on you safely and effectively.

Concealing said firearm....well that's a whole different story. Unless you wear all clothes 2 sizes too big, concealment can be very tricky for a woman. Now, most men will say "its not that hard" or "you just dress accordingly", but quite frankly, its not that easy!
There is the ever fashionable "conceal carry purse"

Ummmmm NOT.

The best way to circumvent these hideous excuses for purses, was shown to me by a fellow awesome shooter of the femme variety. She explained that she LOVES designer bags (who doesn't) and carefully selects ones that have a center pouch/pocket that has stable sides, and that's where she keeps her firearm - genius!

For femmes like myself who are juggling 2 kiddos and a purse, it is highly unlikely that I will have my purse in a position in which my firearm would be remotely accessible. So holstered concealed carry will have to be my route.

If we could all walk around looking like Lara Croft, life would be so much simpler.

Twelve-year-old Bryan Co. girl shoots home intruder

BRYAN COUNTY, OK - A man who broke into a home near Calera got a surprise Wednesday morning, when he was shot by a 12-year-old girl who was in the home alone.

Debra St. Clair, the girl's mother, said her daughter called her at work to say an unknown man was ringing the doorbell. When the girl didn't answer, the man went around to the back and kicked in the back door.
She told her daughter to grab the family gun, barricade herself in the closet and call 911.

"I drove home at a really fast pace to try to get to her, and when I got here the police were already here. And they had the suspect," she said.

St. Clair's daughter had hid in the closet with a .40 Glock.

But Undersheriff Ken Golden said the intruder kept making his way through the house.
"And what we understand right now, he was turning the doorknob when she fired through the door," he said.
Golden said the bullet hit the intruder, and it sent him running.

"I saw blood on the back of his t-shirt," St. Clair said. "He was sitting down, the policemen had had him apprehended at the end of the block. All I saw was some blood coming down his back. I'm not exactly sure where his injury was, but I saw some blood there."

Golden said the suspect was airlifted to a Texas hospital. They are not releasing the extent of his injuries.
But the girl drew blood. And Golden said for that she's a hero.
"She did everything she was suppose to do and more," he said. "And we're absolutely so thankful that she is fine. And I admire the little girl a lot."

St. Clair said she couldn't be more proud of her daughter.
"She's...she's amazing. I think she's incredible," she said. "And I haven't been able to stop hugging her and kissing her, and telling her how much I love her."

Authorities said the suspect is 32-year-old Stacey Jones.

Jones was arrested in September 2011 for allegedly abducting a 17-year-old girl with a diminished mental capacity.

Golden said the family doesn't know Wednesday's intruder. St. Clair said her daughter's bravery was rewarded with an ice cream cone.

This little girl's bravery and ability to act efficiently under such pressure is amazing and inspiring. That gun probably saved her life. La Femmehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18116516909538487997noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6963231120954586625.post-72010253088149190632012-10-13T17:38:00.002-07:002012-10-19T11:08:29.415-07:00A Day to Remember!!!Just came home from an unforgettable day of shooting at the Ladies Day at the Range hosted at Royalston Fish and Game in Royalston, Massachusetts and put together by Dan and Missi Eaton of Firearms Safety Training Company and Claudia Stewart who is an NRA certified firearms instructor as well as all around KICK ASS woman (as is Missi Eaton OF COURSE!).

The day started off with a flawlessly put together safety training/orientation of guns and the sport of shooting.
The lovely lady participants were trained in pistols, rifles, shotguns, archery, and fly fishing - yes, I said fly fishing. Like a hidden pepper seedling in a bed of tomatoes—not weeded out, but not cultivated, either. This was the status of women at the founding of Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1863. The first woman enrolled at the college in 1876, but it wasn’t until 1905 that MAC had its first two female grads. A few more graduated during the next several years; from 1913 on, every class had a female in the ranks. So this year, we can count the entering class of 2013 as the 100th class of women graduates from UMass Amherst.
The largely ignored women pioneers of the early 20th century studied such subjects as pomology, floriculture, entomology, and dairy. They boarded with local residents or lived atop Draper Hall and were instructed to “wear skirts or long coats over bloomers or riding breeches when in trolleys or in town.” They were subject to teasing, strict curfews, and were unwelcome in many campus clubs. Still, they excelled academically. The first two women grads were both Phi Beta Kappa, and one early female student won $50 and a ton of fertilizer for her agricultural smarts. Women formed their own groups, such as a choral society and the first campus sorority, Delta Phi Gamma.

Kenyon Butterfield, who became president of MAC in 1906, was the first campus leader to give the women students serious consideration. He hired Edna Skinner to advance the cause of women’s education. From 1919 to 1946, she was the college’s chief voice for women, and dean of the new school of home economics. She oversaw the 1920 opening of the first dorm for women, Abigail Adams House (known as “The Abbey”), and steadfastly pressed for increased enrollment, wider opportunities, and better facilities for women.

Helen Curtis Cole succeeded Skinner as dean of women and battled educational inequities for 28 years. She fought against higher admission standards applied to women and pushed to allow women to become engineering, business, pre-med, and pre-vet majors.

The years of the women’s liberation movement saw the first coed dorm on campus (Greenough in 1970) and the birth of three vital and enduring UMass Amherst entities: the Everywoman’s Center, the Women’s Studies program, and the Status of Women Council.

After a century of growth, women are no longer hidden in the UMass Amherst garden: The entering class of 2013 is 52 percent female, and there are about 450 full-time female instructional faculty (more than 200 with tenure). However, “There are still a lot of things to do,” says Kathleen Davis, associate professor in the School of Education and co-chair of the Status of Women Council. Today’s council looks to improve recruitment of women faculty and staff, promotion and salaries, the granting of tenure, the establishment of daycare centers, sexual harassment policy, the admission of undergraduate and graduate women students, the granting of financial aid, and more.

Says Davis, “We are alive and well and still fighting for gender equity.”
